Assateague State Park to Ocean City, MD

It’s been a while since I’ve hit the road, but I’ve finally managed to complete a 3500km road-trip in the United States. We specifically hit up the Central-Eastern shore states: New York; Pennsylvania; Maryland; Virginia; Delaware; and New Jersey.

We were lucky, we managed to skip away from a massive hurricane which just whipped North and South Carolina fairly hard, we only missed it by a few days.

Because there is just so much to talk about on this trip, I’ll start with one location at a time. Today, I’m going to talk about my awesome experience at and around Assateague Island State Park in Maryland.

Assateague Island State Park is located on the Atlantic shore of Maryland, steps from the ocean. The state of Virginia is less than an hour South of the park. Now, the beach itself, wow… soft and fine white sand, the ocean was refreshing, not too cold to give you a shock, but not as hot as a warm bath – it was perfect!

Nick and I set up our tent at our reserved campsite. We could hear the ocean waves crashing onto the beach 24/7 and the neighing of the wild horses roaming around; yes, you heard me right, wild horses, hundreds of them, roaming ALL over the island!

You have to be careful around the horses, they are not aggressive in the sense that they will charge at you, but they will defend themselves if you get too close to them. The thing is, these horses are scavengers. They don’t only eat grass, they’ll literally eat ANYTHING! They will snag any piece of meat that you’re grilling, take any piece of food that you’ve left outside and even rip open a tent if you have food inside. Actually, from my personal experience, I accidentally left a carton of guava juice outside, it just so happened that my friend decided to use the washroom while I was taking a shower. When I returned to my campsite, there were two wild horses wandering around my items. I stood from afar to ensure I wouldn’t be injured and watched as they sniffed their way into any items left behind. Then there it was, they snatched the carton of guava juice right out of my cooler, attempted to rip it open with their teeth, but with no success. The next best solution was to take a powerful stop with one hoof, and then, of course, a big BOOM! Guava juice exploded everywhere and the horses trotted off. It was pretty dramatic, and I was nearly on the ground laughing!

If you ever find yourself staying at Assateague State Park, you’ll most likely never want to leave the site. However, if the weather is bad one day or you are eager to do some exploring, I recommend visiting these places in Ocean City, Maryland, just a 15-minute drive away!

1. Dive into the world of quirks and oddities at the ‘Ripley’s Believe it or Not’ museum in Ocean City, Maryland.

2. Dine into Maryland food culture by eating some soft-shell crab at ‘Crab Alley’, just on the outskirts of Ocean City, Maryland.

3. Wake-up early and dive into one of the best pancakes breakfasts you’ll have ever tried in your life at ‘Happy Jack Pancake House’ in Ocean City, Maryland.
